About Class 10 Science Chapter 1 – Chemical reactions and equations

Chemical reactions and equations is the 1st chapter of class 10th science syllabus and its one of the easiest chapter of class 10th science syllabus. Chemical reactions, how to write chemical equations, how to perform combination and decomposition reactions, how to balance a chemical reaction and more are covered in the first chapter of NCERT Class 10 Science Chapter 1 Chemical Reactions and Equations. We learned the physical and chemical variations of matter in previous courses. A chemical reaction happens if a chemical transition occurs. The reactants, products, and their physical states are all symbolically represented in a full chemical reaction. You’ll also learn how to write a chemical equation, which is a description of a chemical reaction in symbols. The chapter also describes how to balance various chemical equations in various states.

How to revise for chemical reactions and equations mcq online test

    • Memorise class 10 science handwritten notes pdf of the chapter carefully.
    • Create Flowcharts to remember concepts in a concise manner for revision in less time.
    • In Chemistry, practice chemical reactions.
    • Thoroughly focus on the lines of NCERT textbook with a subjective approach in understanding fundamentals.
    • Practice chapter-wise Solved Examples and back exercises from NCERT texts.
    • Solve science sample papers class 10 with solutions in a timed manner.

Chemical reactions and equations Revision Notes

    Chemical reactions –  During
chemical reactions, chemical composition of substances changes or new
    substances are formed.
    Chemical reactions
    can be written in chemical
    equation
form which should be always balanced.

    Types of Chemical Reactions

    TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
    REACTIONS EXAMPLES
Combination reaction – A single product is formed from two or more reactants. 2Mg +O2→2MgO
Decomposition reaction – A single reactant breaks down to yield two or more products.

    1.  Thermal decomposition
    2. Electrolysis
    3. Photo chemical reaction

    1. 2Pb(NO3)2 → 2PbO + 4NO2 +O2
    2. 2H2O →2H2 +O2
    3. 2AgBr →2Ag +Br2
Displacement reaction – One element is displaced by another element. Zn + CuSO4→ ZnSO4 + Cu
Double displacement reaction – Exchange of ions between reactants. AgNO3
    +NaCl →AgCl +NaNO3
Redox reaction – Both oxidation and reduction take place simultaneously. CuO + H2 → Cu + H2O
Exothermic reaction: A chemical reaction in which heat energy is evolved.

    C + O2 →CO2 (g) + heat

Endothermic reaction: A chemical reaction in which heat energy is absorbed.

    ZnCO3 + Heat →ZnO + CO2

Redox reaction: Chemical reaction in which both oxidation and reduction take place simultaneously.

    • Oxidation: Reaction that involves the gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen.
    • Reduction: Reaction that shows the loss of oxygen or gain of hydrogen.

    ZnO + C→Zn + CO

    • ZnO is reduced to Zn – reduction
    • C is oxidized to CO– oxidation

Effects of oxidation reactions in our daily life:

    1. Corrosion : It is an undesirable change that occurs in metals,
when they are attacked by moisture, air, acids and bases.
    Examples –
    • Corrosion (rusting) of iron: Fe2O3. xH2O (Hydrated iron
      oxide)
    • Corrosion of copper: CuCO3.Cu (OH) 2
      (Basic copper carbonate)
    • Corrosion of silver: Ag2S (Silver sulphide)
    • Corrosion of Aluminum: Al2O3 (Aluminum oxide)
    2. Rancidity: Undesirable
change that takes place in oil containing food items due to the oxidation of
    fatty acids.
    Preventive methods

    • Adding antioxidants to the food materials.
    • Storing food in air tight container
    • Flushing out air with nitrogen gas.
    • Refrigeration
